This is a career-seasonal position. Career-Seasonal positions are subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. Typically this position is in a non-pay status for 2 weeks to 2 months, depending on funding around the months of December or January. This position will serve as the Lead Science Communicator for the Resource Education Division (RED) at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, based out of Gatlinburg, TN or at the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center near Waynesville, NC. Primary responsibilities include:
Providing science information relating to park research to various internal and external audiences. Interacting with a variety of researchers, internal and external, to synthesize the results of their research. Develop new and strengthen existing partnerships, with both formal and informal agreements, in order to explore new ways of science communication and engagement. Promote the use of Audience Centered Experiences, including Citizen Science, weaving in the park's critical issues into existing programs and new programming providing multiple viewpoints. This position works closely with the Division of Resource Education and the Division of Resource Management and Science. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/24/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect either full-time or 40 hours per week. If a part-time work schedule is reflected, the hours must be annotated to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience includes coordinating, managing or directing scientific data-collection projects; researching and synthesizing scientific findings, developing long range program plans; developing science communication and engagement programs; managing partnerships or other similar work. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least three full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education, a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly-related field such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, archeology, anthropology, geology, meteorology, civil and environmental engineering, park and recreation management, social sciences, museum sciences, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified above may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in this position. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
